Program on Innovation and Financial Sustainability

Strategic Sourcing

By maximizing the University’s purchasing power in alignment with core values, the University has the opportunity to capture savings while also allowing faculty and staff to more easily purchase goods.

Within this context, the work group is focused on strengthening organizational policies and practices to benefit employees and the overall organization.

Charge

The Strategic Sourcing Work Group is charged with implementing changes to:

  • strengthen the Strategic Purchasing, Contracts and Insurance (SPCI) office;
  • implement an eProcurement technology solution (e.g., Jaggaer);
  • expand strategic sourcing activities;
  • update and enforce purchasing policies across campus; and
  • optimize overall procurement processes.

Initial Planning Efforts

In spring 2021, SPCI went live with Jaggaer, an eProcurement technology solution that is used by more than 600 institutions, including MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, University of Pennsylvania, New York University, Stanford, University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins, Emory and Rice. The Jaggaer tool is crucial to realizing savings and makes it easier and more efficient for staff and faculty to purchase commonly used goods. SPCI is continuing to promote the use of the system and to upgrade the system as needed.
